Major Medical and Surgical

The Major Medical and Surgical endorsement offers reimbursement for veterinary treatments (both medical and surgical) for accidents, injuries, illness, or disease up to a limit. This endorsement does NOT reimburse maintenance veterinary costs. Please see examples of covered expenses below. This endorsement is NOT available on a stand-alone basis, but it can be added to a Full Mortality policy.

What you need to know:

  • Deductibles apply per-incident. This means you are responsible for the deductible amount for each claim (not each veterinarian visit) before the policy will respond.

  • Most companies also require a copayment percentage on either diagnostics and/or treatment - between 20% – 30%.

  • Claims must be reported immediately within the policy period. (Available for claims 24/7.)

  • Pre-existing conditions may NOT be covered, whether or not a claim was ever filed. Companies will review a horse’s health history on a case-by-case basis to determine the exclusions.

  • Most (but not all) insurance companies will restrict the medical limits to the insured value of the horse. For example, a horse insured at a $10,000 value can only have medical coverage limits up to $10,000.
